Save the Monarchs,

Plant Native Milkweed

Monarch Mami is a community conservation project dedicated to supporting and sustaining the habitat of Monarch Butterflies and other vital pollinators in North America. With pollinator populations in decline, we are in a unique position to make a difference, and together we can plant seeds of hope for future generations.

The Community Conservation Project

The population of Monarch Butterflies is in decline and one major factor is loss of habitat. Milkweed plants are where Monarchs lay their eggs and are the only food source for Monarch caterpillars once hatched. Native Milkweed has become scarce along the Western Monarch's migration route and California plays an important role in changing that. The California coastal forests serve as over wintering sites and inland natural spaces serve as nesting and feeding areas. With development in Los Angeles paving over vital Monarch habitat, we must be intentional in rebuilding it with pockets of care across the region.

The purpose of Monarch Mami is to raise awareness about the population decline of our butterflies and other pollinators, to encourage people to plant native Milkweed and other pollinator friendly native plants in their community, and to improve future survival conditions of the Monarch Butterfly by actively strengthening and expanding their habitat.

Monarch Mami aims to partner with community gardens, schools, and land stewards to plant and maintain native Milkweed and other native pollinator plants. Support for this project includes volunteering at planting events, buying merch, and/or donating to Monarch Mami. All proceeds will fund project restoration efforts.

Monarch Mami's Two Priorities

Support caterpillars from egg through chrysalis

Message from the Founder

In the Summer of 2024, hosting Monarch caterpillars happened by way of fate. I met a fellow naturalist who had lots of hungry caterpillars but not enough Milkweed. I offered to help and began this wonder filled journey of providing native Milkweed to hungry caterpillars and watching their development under the staircase outside my home. The process filled me with childlike fascination and joy, I found myself naming each one and tracking it's growth. I couldn't help but share it with everyone that would listen. This experience led me to learn more about these amazing creatures, from the Monarchs miraculous growth cycle, to their incredible migration patterns, and the harsh truth of their declining population and the human impacts causing it. All of these elements were a catalyst for starting this community conservation project. I believe that by working together to plant native Milkweed and other nectar producing native plants in our yards, schools, and community gardens, together we can help support the Monarch popluation not only survive but STABILIZE, and ultimately, THRIVE for generations to come. After all, one third of the food we eat depends on pollinators, it would be smart of us to live in harmony with them. The pictures below are just a few moments from Summer'24, moments that inspired this project. -B
